Comacchio: The Little Venice

Comacchio is a lagoon jewel that fascinates with its canals, historic bridges and evocative atmospheres. Nicknamed "Little Venice", the city stands on thirteen islands and is an ancient heir of the Etruscan civilization, linked to the nearby city of Spina, one of the most important commercial ports of the 6th century BC


Historical monuments of Comacchio

  • Trepponti. The undisputed symbol of the city, this majestic structure from 1634 was designed by the architect Luca Danesi. Composed of five stairways that meet on a base of Istrian stone, Trepponti is one of the most photographed panoramic points of Comacchio.
  • Ponte degli Sbirri. Built in the 17th century near the old Ospedale degli Infermi, this bridge offers one of the most iconic views of the city.
  • Loggiato dei Cappuccini. With its 142 arches and over 400 meters in length, this elegant portico leads to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Aula Regia, testifying to the historical and religious influence of the area.


Museums and Archaeological Heritage

  • Museo Delta Antico. Housed in the former Ospedale degli Infermi, this museum contains over 2000 finds that tell the story of the Delta, from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. Among the most important finds is the Roman ship "Fortuna Maris", a merchant vessel from the 1st century BC found almost intact with its cargo.
  • Manifattura dei Marinati. A place that tells the story of the tradition of processing eels and sea bream, typical products of local gastronomy. An experience that combines history and culinary culture.


Etruscan Heritage: The City of Spina

A few kilometres from Comacchio are the remains of the Etruscan city of Spina, one of the most important commercial centres of the 6th century BC. Over 4000 tombs have been found here with funerary objects rich in Attic ceramics and precious artefacts, evidence of the cultural influence and trade between the Etruscans and the Greeks.


Natural and Architectural Heritage

  • Po Delta Park. Recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, the park combines nature and history in perfect balance. Among its treasures are the ancient Abbey of Pomposa, dating back to the 9th century and famous for its medieval frescoes, and the Pieve di San Giorgio, the oldest place of worship in the province of Ferrara.
  • Bosco della Mesola. This ancient lowland forest, one of the few remaining in Italy, is home to a rare population of red deer and offers nature trails, perfect for those who want to explore an environment rich in history and biodiversity.

Primavera Slow From March 21 to June 22, 2025, the Po Delta Park organizes "Primavera Slow", an event dedicated to lovers of nature and outdoor activities. For three months, the area is transformed into an open-air laboratory with excursions on foot, by bicycle, on horseback and by boat, allowing you to discover uncontaminated landscapes and observe the rich biodiversity of the area.


Carnival on the Water Until March 2, 2025, Comacchio celebrates one of the most evocative events of the local tradition: the Carnival on the Water. The streets and canals of the city fill with allegorical boats, masks and itinerant shows, creating a magical atmosphere that involves adults and children in a one-of-a-kind celebration.


Marinated Fish Festival From 25 to 27 April 2025, Comacchio pays homage to its gastronomic tradition with the Marinated Fish Festival. An unmissable event for lovers of seafood, with tastings of local specialties, show cooking, guided tours of the historic Marinated Fish Factory and meetings with industry experts.


Comacchio Half Marathon On May 10, 2025, running enthusiasts will be able to participate in the Comacchio Half Marathon, a race that crosses the unique landscapes of the lagoon city, offering a fascinating route between bridges, canals and nature.


Gran Premio degli 11 Ponti On June 7, 2025, Comacchio will host the traditional Gran Premio degli 11 Ponti, a foot race that runs through the charming historic center of the city. An event that combines sport, history and entertainment in a unique setting.


Feast of San Cassiano From 10 to 13 August 2025, Comacchio celebrates its patron saint, San Cassiano, with a series of events that include concerts, shows, food stands and attractions for the whole family. The most anticipated moment is the great fireworks display that lights up the sky above the canals.


Summer Carnival in the Lidi Pomposa and Scacchi On August 8, 2025, the Lidi Pomposa and Scacchi will celebrate with the Summer Carnival, an evening of celebration with floats, masks and live music, transforming the seaside resorts into an explosion of colors and joy.


Preview Buskers Festival In mid-August, Comacchio becomes the stage for the Preview of the Buskers Festival, one of the most famous street art events in Europe. Musicians, acrobats and international artists perform in the squares and along the canals, creating a suggestive and engaging atmosphere.


Eel Festival From September 27 to October 12, 2025, the 27th edition of the Eel Festival will take place, one of the most anticipated events of the year. For three consecutive weekends, Comacchio celebrates its iconic dish with tastings, artisan markets, musical performances and demonstrations of eel fishing and processing. A perfect opportunity to discover the deep bond between the city and its culinary traditions.
